Texting while driving has been outlawed in Alabama where I currently reside. Talking on a cell phone has been outlawed from my home state of Illinois for many years. Of the 39 states who have outlawed driving while using a mobile device, Massechusetts is using a recent case to drive home the point. A Massechusetts teen was sentenced Wednesday to 2 years in prison and drivers license revokation for 15 years. The crime? Vehicular Homicide by Texting, a crime that wouldn't have existed just a few years ago.
Aaton Deveau took his eyes off the road while sending/reading a text for just enough time to swerve into oncoming traffic and hitting head on the driver of a truck. The 55 year old man survived for 18 days in the hospital before dying of severe head trauma.
Seventeen years old at the time of the fatal crash, Deveau, now a year older stated that he had made a mistake and would like to apologize to the family. The trivial text that caused the wreck was hardly worth the loss of life that is caused and the near ruin of Deveau's. Even though Deveau's sentence is 2 years, his life will forever be marred by his choice to drive distracted. His sentence will be with him always, because as we know at http://www.exclusiveprisoner.com/, the sentence doesn't end when an inmate walks out of those prison doors. It will forever be haunting them, making it hard to succeed in a world where jobs are few and judgements are harsh.

Poor Amber, first she’s knocked up and has to live her teen pregnancy nightmare on national television under the guise of keeping other teens from falling into the same cycle of teen drama. Pregnancy has been the least of Amber’s problems though. For the most part, what we’ve seen of Amber’s family seems to be as dysfunctional as they come. She comes from a broken home herself and gets very little support from her parents. Isn’t Amber’s father critically ill, with liver disease or something? I bet her has other things on his mind besides keeping up with his daughter’s chastity. Wait a minute; Gary is somewhat older than Amber too? Isn’t there some legal issue surrounding this ill fated romance? Amber has now dabbled with sex and now she’s dabbling in drugs. This has landed her in her current dilemma, prison. Seriously, is no one counseling this child? Yes, she is just a child. I would hope that she is not being allowed to make the decision to “go to prison” to save her life without thinking about the consequences long and hard.
With her felony conviction, here is the future Amber can look forward to after release. If she serves 2 years in prison and does the remainder of the 5 years on parole, she will have to live under the watchful eye of a parole officer which will cost her approximately $50 a month. She will have to have a full time job. (You know how employers LOVE young adults with drama filled lives and felony convictions!) She must also have a stable address and must submit to random visits from her parole officer that may include urine drug screening. She will also find that long after her sentence has been served, she will carry the stigma of a felony conviction like a bad scar for many years to come.
It seems that Amber’s entire post release plan is the same as the option she had before opting to go to prison. If she had done everything expected of her after her release, she would have never needed to “opt out” and go to prison. She could have bypassed a lot of life hurdles if she’d just stuck to the script given to her when she was first arrested.
Maybe Amber is choosing to remove herself from little Leah’s life to spare the poor child a view of the horrible train wreck that is her mother’s life.
I had to post this photo of Amber before prison hardens her.
